Bon Iver came together in 2006 through the efforts of singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. The band's name "Bon Iver" derives from the French phrase bon hiver, meaning "good winter," a catchphrase from the popular television series "Northern Exposure."

Vernon independently released Bon Iver's debut album, "For Emma, Forever Ago," in July 2007. The majority of that album was recorded while Vernon spent three months isolated in a cabin in northwestern Wisconsin. The band later won two Grammy Awards in 2012 for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album for their album "Bon Iver, Bon Iver." They released their third album "22, A Million" in 2016.
