<a href="https://www.inseries.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">IN Series</a> will present the world premiere of SONG OF SAKUNTALA, composed by IN Series Artistic Director Timothy Nelson, this June. Conceived as a 90-minute, uninterrupted concert in the spirit of Indian classical musical performances, Song of Sakuntala is drawn from Kalidasa’s 5th century play Shakuntala—a deeply important text of South Asian literature, often compared in importance to Shakespeare’s Hamlet—and from poetry by three landmark Indian poets: Rabindranath Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, and Vidyapati, as well as sacred Mahabharata words. The work unfolds across seven acts built on a palindromic structure, performed over a single continuous drone, for an ensemble of oboe, viola da gamba, violin, sitar, and tabla.&nbsp; The production will feature singers Aryssa Leigh Burrs, Teresa Ferrara, Marvin Wayne Allen. The instrumental ensemble is led by acclaimed sitarist Rajib Karmakar.

Noli Korean Jazz Ensemble, based out of the Washington, D.C. area, plays a unique fusion of jazz and traditional Korean folk music. Performing original compositions, the group combines Korean samulnori rhythms with jazz melodic and harmonic sensibilities for a sound that is both innovative and authentic to the traditions it draws from. While many groups pair jazz with East Asian instruments, what sets Nori apart is how they use the rhythmic cycles that form the basis of traditional Korean music to inform their harmonies and improvisational systems. In the group’s performances, you will feel the drums carry you with their earthy textures to the madong – the field where traditionally communities come together in drumming and dance to celebrate the harvest. Cécile McLorin Salvant is a composer, singer, and visual artist known for her rich contralto voice, passion for storytelling, and genre-blending style, connecting jazz to baroque, folkloric music, vaudeville, and the blues. Described by the late Jessye Norman as “a unique voice supported by an intelligence and full-fledged musicality,” Salvant is an eclectic curator, unearthing rarely recorded, forgotten songs.

Her 2023 album, Mélusine, which features songs in French, Occitan, English, and Haitian Kreyol, received two Grammy nominations. Savant’s newest album, Oh Snap, is set to release in September 2025.

A leading voice of the harp, Brandee Younger made history at the 2022 Grammy Awards as the first Black female solo artist nominated in the Best Instrumental Composition category for her song “Beautiful Is Black.” Younger has performed and recorded across countless genres with artists including John Legend, The Roots, Lauryn Hill, Common, Pharoah Sanders, Ravi Coltrane, Ron Carter, and Charlie Haden. Additionally, her original composition “Hortense” was featured in the Netflix Concert-Documentary, Beyoncé: Homecoming.
