We’re taking over 9:30 Club in Washington D.C. on 16 May 2026 for a night of screaming every word, moshing with strangers, and feeling absolutely everything.
This is not a quiet night out. Powa is a method of compassionate assistance that helps guide the consciousness toward a positive rebirth. This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in end-of-life support, caregiving, spiritual care, or developing a wiser and more compassionate relationship with death. Dawes will read from the work of other poets cited as his literary influences as well as from his own work.

GLOBAL’s annual AcceptAbility Gala brings together policymakers from both sides of the aisle, key scientists from NIH, philanthropists, corporate sponsors, and the Down syndrome community. Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition, affecting an estimated 400,000 Americans, yet it has long been one of the least-funded genetic conditions at the NIH. With GLOBAL’s leadership bringing together multiple stakeholders, the NIH Down syndrome research and medical care budget has increased by $440 million over the last seven years. The AcceptAbility Gala is an opportunity to celebrate the abilities of those with Down syndrome, highlight federal research funding increases, and educate Congress and the community about the transformative DeOndra Dixon INCLUDE Project Act that will elongate life and improve health outcomes for people with Down syndrome.

Come out and wordplay! You're invited to watch or compete in Pun DMV, our pun contest. The night is hosted by Dana Fleitman, and it has two events: 
The Freestyle: Each competitor chooses a punning theme, then prepares in advance a three-minute speech packed with puns inspired by that theme. On the night of the show, the competitors deliver their speeches on stage. The audience favorite wins!
The Tournament: An on-the-spot punning tournament featuring up to 20 people. At the start of each match, contestants are given a theme. They then take turns making up puns on the spot. People are eliminated when they're stumped. The last person standing moves on to the next round (or victory). Anyone in attendance can compete, and you can sign up on site when you arrive. 
The winners of either contest get cash prizes from the Improv (and eternal glory)!

Come to the National Museum of the American Indian for an in-gallery talk that brings visitors together with curators and other experts for deeper consideration of specific artworks currently on view in the museum. Join Rebecca Trautmann, curator of <a href="https://americanindian.si.edu/explore/exhibitions/item?id=1011" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Water’s Edge: The Art of Truman Lowe</a>, for a conversation with interdisciplinary artist and carver, Erin Ggaadimits Ivalu Gingrich (Koyukan Dené/Iñupiaq), the museum’s 2025-2026 Native Arts Fellow. Together, they’ll offer visitors a closer look at specific artworks in the exhibition and discuss the connections between Ivalu and Lowe’s art practices.
<a href="https://ggaadimitsivalu.com/about" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Erin Ggaadimits Ivalu</a>
(she/her) is a Koyukon Dené and Iñupiaq carver, interdisciplinary artist and educator working and subsisting in South-Central Alaska on Denaʼina homelands. Honoring her arctic and subarctic ancestral homelands, Ivalu's work represents what has tied her and her ancestors to the North. Ivalu received her BFA in Native Art from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, her MFA in Studio Arts from the Institute of American Indian Arts and is currently a Term Instructor of Art for the University of Alaska Anchorage. Awarded with the Native Arts Fellowship at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) from August 2025 through July 2026, Ivalu will be researching and visiting with carved and adorned cultural belongings from her homelands. This work is connected with the tangible ancestral discourse that is within carved cultural belongings and the designs to make tracing and echoes of what the ancestors made. This research will take the form of photographs, sketches, tracings, writings, film, and templates through visiting the tangible cultural belongings or archives. Following the conclusion of this fellowship, Ivalu will focus on building a cabin at a fish camp to stay connected to what feeds her and her work.

This year, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian honors the legacies of Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Northern Cheyenne, 1933-2025) and Harvey Phillip Pratt (Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, 1941-2025) and their invaluable contributions to the museum.

ICA Language Services

ICA Language Services (ICA), a family-owned, woman-led small business based in Arlington, is celebrating its 40th anniversary, marking decades of supporting the U.S. military and diplomatic community through language training and testing. Founded in April 1986 as Inlingua Foreign Language Center, a 6-classroom language school, ICA expanded under the leadership of Deidre Doyle, an entrepreneur with a background in organizational management who joined the company the same year. As a military spouse, she had developed a deep understanding of military organizations and culture, helping shape ICA into a trusted provider of language training and testing for military professionals. Doyle became a partner in 1993 and sole owner in 2009, when she changed the name to ICA Language Services. Today, ICA operates a 60+ classroom schoolhouse in Rosslyn and has delivered nearly five million hours of language instruction and more than 30,000 language assessments across 120+ languages. ICA also provides training on military bases throughout the US and abroad. The company is now led by President and CEO Lexie Casey, Doyle’s daughter, who joined ICA in 2009 after a decade in government contracting. Casey became a partner in 2014 and assumed day-to-day leadership in 2015, when Doyle transitioned to Chair of the Board. ICA has employed more than 1,300 individuals from 131 countries, often providing a first job in the United States for language professionals. Certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, ICA provides proficiency- and performance-based language training and testing services supporting diplomacy, security, and global engagement.
