Break out your beads and celebrate Mardi Gras at The Wharf on Sunday, February 15, from 3:00–7:00 PM. This free, neighborhood-wide event features a mile-long parade with decorated floats, stilt walkers, and the King and Queen of Mardi Gras, live music from the Naptown Brass Band and Too Much Talent Band, Mardi Gras-themed kids’ crafts, Hurricanes made with Thrasher’s Rum, and a fireworks finale over the water. Special appearances include the Eastern High School Marching Band, Slapshot, Major Tuddy, the Commanders Band, and the Racing Presidents. Open to the public, rain or shine.

🚨 Urgent: Community members - Adopters and fosters are needed to save 16 dogs on the latest urgent list by Tuesday, 4/28.&nbsp;Adoption fees are sponsored or $0 for some of these dogs and all dogs 81+ pounds.&nbsp;They all need to be adopted or have rescue commitment, and have to leave the shelter by Tuesday (or after spay/neuter.) If no one saves them, they will be euthanized due to being over capacity.&nbsp;
As of 4/25 AM: Up to 15 dogs need adopters and fosters! Alice is being adopted.&nbsp;Adoption fees are sponsored or $0 for Adele, Beauty, Coco Edi, Malcom, Myles, and all dogs 81+ pounds.&nbsp;Check for updates at the Facebook link.&nbsp;&nbsp;
🐶&nbsp;Adopters:&nbsp;Please go to the shelter today between&nbsp;11am to 7pm (arrive by 5:30pm or no later than 6pm).&nbsp;Adopters are able to meet 2 dogs and bring dogs for meet and greets. If anyone is going to adopt them, please comment on their pages in the linked album.
New Tip: Adopters of pit bulls and pit bull mixes: Review the new requirements and complete the&nbsp;Pet Parenting Certification (that takes about an hour)&nbsp;before going to adopt&nbsp;Pit Bull Terriers&nbsp;and specific bully-type breeds. Work is how we spend the bulk of our lives. It drives progress, secures us financially, and influences&nbsp;well-being, from&nbsp;impacting&nbsp;mental health to forging life-long friendships. 
As a student at Columbia University, Jodi Kantor was kicked off the student newspaper. A few years later, with no evidence that she could succeed as a journalist, she dropped out of law school to pursue her calling. She’d go on to win a Pulitzer Prize as one of the New York Times investigative journalists who broke the Harvey Weinstein story. Kantor knows that early professional steps are often marked by uncertainty and today, young people are facing scary terrain with political upheaval, skyrocketing costs of living, and the unknowns of AI. 
Kantor’s new book, How to Start: Discovering Your Life’s Work, will be a springboard for this conversation about careers, purpose, callings, pivots, and meaning—evergreen topics with an eye to the challenging times we’re living in. For wisdom and perspective that spans generations, Kantor will be in conversation with <a href="https://sites.prh.com/oncall" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Dr. Anthony Fauci</a>, the former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the NIH from 1984 to 2022, a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the author of On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service, as well as <a href="https://www.derekthompson.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Derek Thompson</a>, a journalist, host of the podcast “Plain English,” co-author of Abundance, and author of Hit Makers and Derek Thompson On Work.
They’ll share lessons learned and offer tangible help applicable to college students, recent grads, parents, and those who have been working for some time and still grapple with the question of “What do I want to be when I grow up?”

“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance,” Ophelia says in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. “And there is pansies, that’s for thoughts.” In this workshop, we’ll provide materials and inspiration for creating an artistic collage that references the symbolic meanings of flowers found in Ophelia’s famous speech and other poetic texts, from Emily Dickinson to Audre Lorde.
Artist Fellow Hannah Baker Saltmarsh and collaborative partner Sarah Antine will present a brief lesson on the use of flowers as a symbolic language. Participants will then have time to playfully experiment with a wide array of mixed media art and materials, texts, and floral symbolism to create their own visual collage poems.
Children are welcome to accompany adult participants free of charge. An age-appropriate collage activity will be separately provided for them.

Arlington Language School Marks 40th Anniversary

ICA Language Services (ICA), a family-owned, woman-led small business based in Arlington, is celebrating its 40th anniversary, marking decades of supporting the U.S. military and diplomatic community through language training and testing. Founded in April 1986 as Inlingua Foreign Language Center, a 6-classroom language school, ICA expanded under the leadership of Deidre Doyle, an entrepreneur with a background in organizational management who joined the company the same year. As a military spouse, she had developed a deep understanding of military organizations and culture, helping shape ICA into a trusted provider of language training and testing for military professionals. Doyle became a partner in 1993 and sole owner in 2009, when she changed the name to ICA Language Services. Today, ICA operates a 60+ classroom schoolhouse in Rosslyn and has delivered nearly five million hours of language instruction and more than 30,000 language assessments across 120+ languages. ICA also provides training on military bases throughout the US and abroad. The company is now led by President and CEO Lexie Casey, Doyle’s daughter, who joined ICA in 2009 after a decade in government contracting. Casey became a partner in 2014 and assumed day-to-day leadership in 2015, when Doyle transitioned to Chair of the Board. ICA has employed more than 1,300 individuals from 131 countries, often providing a first job in the United States for language professionals. Certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, ICA provides proficiency- and performance-based language training and testing services supporting diplomacy, security, and global engagement.
