Chaos Comes to US Capitol

Growing up in Washington, DC you are used to street closures, demonstrations, and protestors; but what happened in the Nation's Capital on January 6th, 2021 was unprecedented. The last time the US Capitol was breached occurred by the British in 1814. We saw pictures in history books but never would a modern American believe an insurrection from American citizens would happen on the stairs of the US Capitol. Calvin Smith, "I figured something would go down but this" explains the Washingtonian.

Although, if you are Artist and Visual Storyteller, Dee Dwyer, it comes as no surprise "they had been saying this was the goal" says Dee who covers Southeast, Washington, DC, and the Black Lives Matter Movement. "I shed a few tears today," says the mother of two. "My daughter asked me not to go take pictures at the Stop the Steal rally. So I didn't go." Dee whose photographs are seen in major news outlets and publications was "surprised the Capitol wasn't guarded and people could just go through". The Capitol police force has roughly 2000 officers but clearly outnumbered by the angry mob who breached the building, broke windows, smashed doors, and took selfies inside the people's house. Questions are being asked the day after of the Capitol Police and other law enforcement agencies.

Watching things unfold in California, Steve Prett is "sickened and disgusted at every level". The West Coast writer believes "Trump will leave office in 13 days if not sooner but the dam has been broken and this ideology and behavior, is now fully free." Trump supporters say they aren't going away and will continue to fight late yesterday President Trump promises 'orderly transition' on January 20th yet still says the election was stolen from him. Dee believes what happened at the Capitol is "the start they believe in war. They have civil war mentality. They will go up against this country and die for it". Five people have died at the Capitol, one a Capitol police officer. For now, at a high price, Calvin says "democracy won" but you better not turn you back on lady freedom.
