Coronavirus: Several DC Roads Close For Resident Exercise

WASHINGTON, DC — DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Saturday roads in several National Parks would close to allow for exercise during the coronavirus crisis. The closures through April 30 apply to Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park and roads in Anacostia Park and Fort Dupont Park.

Beach Drive, which is already closed to traffic on weekends, will have closures continued through April 30. Some parking areas may be temporarily closed to address congestion.

Anacostia Park and Fort Davis Drive in Fort Dupont Park will be closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through April 30. The Metropolitan Police Department is in charge of the closures on Sunday, April 12 and Monday, April 13, and U.S. Park Police will take over the role on April 14 through April 30.

U.S. Park Police and the National Park Service are monitoring park use for compliance with social distancing guidelines. Residents must stay six feet apart from others outside their household.

Bowser issued a stay-at-home order that took effect on April 1 due to coronavirus concerns. Under the order, residents can only leave their homes for essential activities such as obtaining food and medical care and allowable recreational activities. A violation could lead to a misdemeanor charge, and upon conviction, a fine up to $5,000 or up to 90 days of imprisonment.
