As D.C. Enters Phase Two, 38 New Coronavirus Cases Reported

There are 38 additional cases of the new coronavirus in Washington, D.C., according to data reported for Sunday.

WASHINGTON, D.C.– There are 38 additional cases of the new coronavirus in Washington, D.C., according to data reported for Sunday, bringing the District's total number of cases to 10,058.

Two additional coronavirus-related deaths were reported for Sunday, as well. This brings the total number of COVID-19-related deaths in the District to 535. COVID-19 is the disease caused by the coronavirus.

According to Monday's coronavirus update, on Thursday the District reported its 14th day of sustained decrease in community spread, allowing it to enter phase two of reopening. This begins a new count of community spread for the next phase of reopening.

The District entered phase two of reopening on Monday, lifting a number of restrictions for residents and businesses. Phase two will allow the number of people allowed at mass gatherings to increase to 50 people. Nonessential businesses, including retailers, will also be permitted to serve up to 50 customers inside their business and continue curbside service.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser addressed the District's reopening during a news conference Monday morning.

"It is imperative that D.C. residents use good judgment and follow social distancing guidelines for any of the new activity that they are participating in," she said.

The breakdown of positive cases in D.C. by age is as follows:

  • 0-18: 12 cases
  • 19-30: 529 cases
  • 31-40: 1,765 cases
  • 41-50: 1,584 cases
  • 51-60: 1,617 cases
  • 61-70: 1,355 cases
  • 71-80: 703 cases
  • 81+: 556 cases

The breakdown of positive cases in D.C. by ward is as follows:

  • Ward 4: 2,133 cases
  • Ward 5: 1,517 cases
  • Ward 8: 1,486 cases
  • Ward 7: 1,439 cases
  • Ward 1: 1,435 cases
  • Ward 6: 877 cases
  • Ward 2: 558 cases
  • Ward 3: 467 cases
  • Unknown: 166 cases

The breakdown of coronavirus-related deaths in D.C. by age is as follows:

  • <19: 0
  • 20-29: 3 deaths
  • 30-39: 7 deaths
  • 40-49: 17 deaths
  • 50-59: 62 deaths
  • 60-69: 123 deaths
  • 70-79: 135 deaths
  • 80+: 188 deaths

  • Ward 1: 57 deaths
  • Ward 2: 30 deaths

Residents should take the following actions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used if soap and water are not available
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
