DC The 3rd Best Winter Holiday Destination In The US: Report

WASHINGTON, DC -- The holidays are almost here, and a new list selecting the best cities for winter holidays has chosen the District and the surrounding area as third on the list.

WalletHub ranked the cities based on six categories: travel costs and hassles, local costs, attractions, weather, cold-weather activities, and safety. D.C. placed highest in safety at No. 2, and also scored in the top six in travel costs and hassles, attractions, and weather. It scored worst in local costs, coming in at 29th.

Only the Chicago area (No. 1) and the Portland area (No. 2) beat the D.C. area on the list. D.C. slotted in just ahead of Pittsburgh. New York rounded out the top five.

"Compared with other rankings that focus on each destination’s scenic quality, this report focuses primarily on the cost and convenience of traveling to each location as well as its affordability," the report states. "It also ensures that the number of attractions and variety of activities in each destination will keep everyone busy and entertained throughout the trip."
