Arrive early
An estimated 700,000 will head to the National Mall to watch the fireworks show. That's equivalent to the entire population of the District. That means parking will be non-existent and getting a good spot to watch the show will mean taking the Metro to the Mall hours before the event. Protect yourself from the heat and noise
Standing all day in the July heat comes with risks. Drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and bring fans and hats to keep yourself cool.
Also, you'll be right under the fireworks, which will be extremely loud. Consider bringing some hearing protection.
Escape the crowds
You don't have to be on the National Mall to get a great view of the fireworks show. There are plenty of outstanding viewing spots in Arlington, Va., like Gateway Park in Rosslyn or Long Bridge Park near Crystal City. There's also Gravelly Point just outside of Reagan National Airport.
You can also book a cruise with a number of companies that do family-friendly fireworks cruises along the Potomac River. Potomac Riverboat Company, Entertainment Cruises, and Embark are just a few of the companies that do these tours.
