DC Coronavirus Update: No New Deaths; 59 Additional Cases

There currently are 239 available ventilators in hospitals and 93 patients in D.C. hospitals, according to the D.C. Health Department.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The D.C. Department of Health reported no additional deaths as of July 12 due to COVID-19, the illness associated with the coronavirus. The total number of deaths in the District due to COVID-19 stands at 568.

D.C. Health also confirmed 59 new positive cases of COVID-19 Monday. This brings the District's total number of positive cases to 10,906. Community spread is one of the metrics D.C. Health monitors to determine when it will be safe for the District to enter the next phase of its phased reopening. In order to move forward, the District must see a sustained decrease in community spread over seven consecutive days. The District has experienced nine days of sustained decrease.

According to D.C. Health, 130,220 COVID-19 tests have been administered in the District, 96,163 D.C. residents have been tested, and 1,756 have been cleared from isolation. The District currently has 84 intensive care unit beds available out of 345 total intensive care unit beds. There are currently 201 ventilators being used and 25 COVID-19 positive ICU patients.   • Ward 4 has 2,239 positive cases
  • Ward 5 has 1,617 positive cases
  • Ward 8 has 1,604 positive cases
  • Ward 7 has 1,563 positive cases
  • Ward 1 has 1,549 positive cases
  • Ward 6 has 992 positive cases
  • Ward 2 has 645 positive cases
  • Ward 3 has 513 positive cases

Globally, more than 12.9 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and more than 570,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Monday morning. In the United States, more than 3.3 million people have been infected and more than 135,000 people have died from COVID-19.

District residents should take the following actions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used if soap and water are not available
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
