DC Gets its Very Own Submarine

The Navy has announced that the first of a new class of submarines will be named after the District.

WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Navy has announced the name of the lead ship in a new class of ballistic missile submarines: the USS Columbia (SSBN 826), named after the District.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted that the District was "honored" to have the sub named after D.C. As a result of this decision, not only will there be a sub named after the city, but the entire class of subs will be called "Columbia-class" ships. The subs, which carry missiles tipped with nuclear warheads, will replace the aging Ohio-class submarines currently in service.

The Columbia is set for a maiden deployment in 2031. The Navy plans to maintain a fleet of 12 SSBNs.
