DC Mayor Makes Stunning Baby Announcement

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser reportedly surprised some in her own administration with news that she was adopting.

WASHINGTON, DC -- D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser made a rather surprising announcement Monday evening: she is adopting a baby.

Bowser, 45, told WUSA Channel 9 of her plans, an announcement that came as a surprise to some people in her own administration, according to the Washington Post.

“I decided to start the adoption journey, just knowing that it was a great time in my life and I had so much to share with a baby,” she told WUSA. “When you sit in the seat that I’m in, you’re used to being able to make things happen, and babies have a way of letting you know that they’re in control.”

The adoption process actually started late last year, but a baby became available much sooner than she had planned, according to the report.

Bowser has never married or had children. Her office isn't disclosing any details about the baby, including gender or age.

She tweeted a statement Monday night asking for privacy.

"As any new mother would feel -- I am thrilled, nervous, and looking forward to each and every stage," she said. "I will be taking the next week or so to enjoy these precious moments with my new baby. I am so grateful to be able to start my family in this wonderful way.

"I will of course remain in contact with my office," she continued. "Because of the great team we have, I don't expect we'll miss a beat, and I know we'll all keep working hard to make DC proud."
