Shortly before 2 p.m., officers from the Sixth District were dispatched to the 3400 block of A Street, S.E., for a call for police service in connection with the serving of a barring notice.
"The officers were given a description and a first name of a person who was barred from the property and the officers engaged that person," Dickerson said.
During the struggle, the suspect pulled out a handgun and an officer was shot. Other officers on the scene arrested the suspect and a weapon was recovered. Dickerson said the officer who was shot had not discharged his weapon.
The officer was in good spirits despite being shot in the lower extremities, according to Dickerson. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Dickerson identified the suspect as an adult male.
"This is an ongoing investigation, so we will still be investigating the bar notice and additional charges," she said. "Detectives are in the area, canvassing for witnesses."
Dickerson said there would be weapon and assault on police charges filed against the suspect.
