The Google Trends data not only reveals what types of food diners are seeking when the search for restaurants on Google, but also the recipes they are looking for to make at home. For example, if someone is looking for information about Japanese food, they may search for Japanese restaurants, sushi or sushi recipes. They may even type in the name of a popular local Japanese eatery. Google takes that data from all over the world and divides it up among various localities — country, state, city, etc. — and ranks the popularity of that food within each community. The number Google generates is the percentage of people in that community who are searching for a particular cuisine.
