DMV Rhode Island Center Closing; Expiration Date Extended

WASHINGTON, DC — The D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles' Rhode Island Service Center will be closed for an indefinite period of time starting Monday, Aug. 10. A lack of staffing at the facility, which is located at 2350 Washington Place, N.E., is the reason for the closure.

No new appointments are being accepted at the Rhode Island Service Center, but DMV customers can make appointments at the Benning Ridge, Georgetown, and 95 M St., S.W., service centers. DMV will be notifying customers who have appointments at the Rhode Island facility on Aug. 10 or after. Those appointments will be honored, but at other DMV facilities.

DMV has extended the expiration date for all documents that expired on or after March 1 of this year until 45 days after the current coronavirus public health emergency ends. This includes D.C. driver licenses, identification cards, vehicle registrations, inspections, ticket payments and ticket adjudication responses. All documents due to expire have been granted a waiver without penalty until all D.C. DMV centers are up and running at full capacity.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed last week that she would be extending the current public health emergency to Oct. 9.
