Esquire Names This DC Bar One of the Best in the USA

The reasons why Showtime Lounge was named one of the 18 best might surprise you.

There's nothing better than relaxing at a great local bar with your favorite beer, and a new ranking from Esquire magazine claims that we've got one of the best in the land.

Showtime Lounge, a bar right around the corner from Howard University at 113 Rhode Island Avenue NW in D.C., has been named one of the 18 best bars in America by Esquire in their annual list released this week.

And it's not because of some fancy drink or chic ambiance -- it's because Showtime is everything that a bar should be.

"There's nothing fancy about the bar itself—draft beer, cheap whiskey, highballs. But the jukebox!" the writer says. "Put it this way: A book accompanies it, listing the contents of each of the home-burned CDs. Soul, R&B, funk, jazz: If those words don't appeal to you and the thought of drinking five-dollar shot-and-beer specials in the company of soul fanatics exerts no magnetic pull on you, go elsewhere."

Last year, Esquire didn't name any D.C. bars to its annual list, but this no-frills neighborhood dive bar didn't escape their attention this time around.

If you do decide to come around, be warned: keep your credit and debit cards in your wallet, as this bar only accepts cash.

Showtime was pretty happy about the recognition in a tweet shortly after the article hit the web:
