WASHINGTON, DC — D.C. homicide detectives are looking for the person responsible for fatally shooting a man early Sunday morning in the Mount Vernon Square area, according to a police release.

Second District officers responded around 2:31 a.m. to the 900 block of 9th Street, Northwest for the report of the sounds of gunshots. When they arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treat, but he later died from his injury, according to police.

The victim's name is being withheld until police contact his next of kin.
