When Millennial financial expert Kevin Mahoney, CFP® and his wife were expecting their first child a few years ago, many of their initial baby conversations revolved around personal finance. The time-consuming research that these financial decisions demanded made him wonder how stressed other couples his age must feel.

As a financial advisor in Washington, D.C., Kevin realized he had an opportunity to help his peers navigate the new financial decisions that arise during our late 20s and 30s. But in order for financial planning to actually work for Millennials, Kevin knew the traditional financial advice model needed to change. In response, he committed to being:

  • A CFP professional (the highest standard in the industry)
  • A fiduciary (always acting in the client’s best interest)
  • Fee only (not selling products or accepting commissions)
  • Open to all young adults (no minimum wealth or income)
  • Available for meetings over video chat and in the evenings

These factors ultimately led Kevin to launch Illumint, which offers fee-only, virtual financial planning specifically to the millennial generation. The company is located in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
