First Degree Murder Charge In November Fatal Shooting Case

DC Police detectives charged a Northeast man with first degree murder for the November fatal shooting of a teen in Benning Ridge.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Homicide detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department arrested Northeast man Saturday and charged him with first degree murder in the November fatal shooting of a male juvenile in Benning Ridge, according to a police release.

On Nov. 22, 2019, around 3:11 p.m., officers from the Sixth District responded to the 4700 block of Benning Road, S.E., for the report of a shooting. Officers found a juvenile male suffering from a gunshot wound. D.C. Fire and EMS transported the victim to a nearby hospital to be treated for life threatening injuries.

On Nov. 26, the victim, who was identified as Eric Mercer, 17, of Northwest, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

Acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, MPD detectives arrested Kemonte Martin, 22, of Northeast on Saturday, Feb. 8, and charged him with first degree murder while armed (premeditated).
