Fuel Truck Overturns In DC, Causes Huge Spill

Authorities are working to clean up the mess on South Capitol Street in Southeast.

WASHINGTON, DC -- A fuel truck overturned in Southeast Friday morning, leaking a huge volume of diesel fuel that authorities have been spending all morning cleaning up.

The truck overturned in the 2300 block of South Capitol Street. It contained 1,700 gallons of diesel fuel and was actively leaking when authorities arrived at the scene. No injuries have been reported.

The hazmat team was able to reduce the leak to a "trickle," D.C. Fire and EMS tweeted at 9:15 a.m. Workers used sand to dike the spill and minimize its spread, and fireboats were dispatched to the Anacostia River to determine if any of it reached the water.
