Getting Around At The 2017 Presidential Inauguration: DC Metro, Walking Maps

Donald Trump will be inaugurated as president on Jan. 20, and if you're attending, you'll need to know how to get there and get back.

WASHINGTON, DC — In just a few days, thousands upon thousands of people will be flooding onto the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for Inauguration Day 2017 on Jan. 20, and if you've never been here before, it can be a bit tricky figuring out where you need to go in the midst of all the confusion. Fortunately, local authorities have prepared for the big day and have created some helpful maps of the area to help you get around, as well as some travel tips so you don't get stuck or lost on the big day.

Click here for a walking map from the D.C. Department of Transportation, which also helpfully shows which Metro stations are nearest to whatever you want to see, whether it be the parade route, the U.S. Capitol where the inauguration will take place or the White House. And you're going to want to take the Metro, as there won't be any place to park and most roads anywhere near the National Mall are going to be shut down.

Metrorail will be open from 4 a.m. until midnight on Inauguration Day, with rush hour service and peak fares in effect from opening until 9 p.m. Metrobus will operate Saturday Supplemental service, which means a Saturday schedule with additional trips on some routes. Expect major detours near the National Mall area.

Metro will be shutting down the Archives, Federal Triangle, Mt. Vernon Square, Pentagon and Smithsonian stations on Inauguration Day, so you'll have to use a different station to get to the National Mall. Also, some station entrances will be entry only or exit only for crowd management.

The parade will make its way down Pennsylvania Avenue NW, so that street will be closed between the Capitol and the White House.
