'Hamilton' Tickets $10 for Some DC Students During Kennedy Center Visit

A nonprofit group is underwriting the cost of some DC students so they can see Tony-winning musical "Hamilton" for $10 a ticket.

Washington, DC — A nonprofit group is spending thousands of dollars to help D.C. Broadway fans see the biggest musical in years when it comes to the Kennedy Center for an affordable price.

The Kennedy Center announced last month that the national tour of “Hamilton” is coming to DC as part of the 2017-18 season.

The Rockefeller Foundation says will spend $6 million to help 100,000 school children in Washington, D.C., and three other cities see the Tony Award-winning musical. The foundation said Thursday the funding would allow students at some schools in the District of Columbia to see the show for $10.

The students will attend special matinee performances and interact with cast members during the program, says WTOP.

Hamilton has taken Broadway by storm, and was nominated for a staggering 16 Tony Awards, including Best Musical -- which it won. It also won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The musical, which was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is based on the biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.

"Hamilton is the story of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary," the statement reads. "Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway, Hamilton is the story of America then, as told by America now."

In March, Lin-Manuel Miranda was rapping with President Barack Obama in the Rose Garden at the White House. Obama had watched Hamilton last July and invited him over to perform privately in the State Dining Room.
