Ida B. Wells Mosaic Art Piece Captivates

In the lobby at Union Station a mosaic tile art piece of Ida B. Wells greets you on the main platform.

Washington, DC

"How did they do this," asks Connie Murphy, who stands in the lobby at Union Station, taking photos of Ida B. Wells. Connie is among hundreds, viewing the "Our Story: Portraits of Change Mosaic Of Ida B. Wells," exhibition at Union Station on its last day. "I'm glad it's Ida B. Wells because she fought for civil rights, voting, and women's rights." A 1,000-square-foot mosaic of Well's a civil rights leader, suffragists, and anti-lynching advocate is on display for a week. The art installation features tiles illustrating 5,000 historic photographs of suffragists and Wells altogether, creating the mosaic. The piece was created by British artist Helen Marshall and commissioned by the Women's Suffrage Centennial Commission to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which was certified into the US Constitution on August 26, 1920. Paul DeBurns says, "captivating" as he gets a closer look at the tiles that make up the piece. To learn more visit https://www.ourstory100.com/
