Injured Bald Eagle Rescued In Southeast DC

Thanks to a wildlife rescue group, an injured bald eagle found in southeast DC will have a better Fourth of July.

WASHINGTON, DC — It was a timely Fourth of July rescue for one of America's greatest symbols of freedom in the nation's capital this weekend. A wild bald eagle in Southeast DC was having trouble breathing and was unable to fly, so a wildlife rescue group stepped in, NBC Washington reported.

The Humane Rescue Alliance received word of the injured bald eagle Saturday afternoon. Officers captured and transported it to City Wildlife, a rescue group based in the city.

Bald eagles used to be an endangered species, but the bird was taken off the list in 2007, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service. The species has been thriving in DC too, with two baby eaglets that hatched in March. (Sign up for real time alerts and a newsletter. iPhone users can download the Patch app in the App Store. City Wildlife provides wild animal rehabilitation services. In another recent incident, it cared for a red-shouldered hawk fledgling before it was sent to a raptor center.
