Kirk Cousins Says Goodbye To DC

In a blog post, he bids farewell to the city he called home for six years.

Washington Redskins Quarterback Kirk Cousins doesn't have a team yet, but he knows it won't be the Redskins after his squad acquired Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs recently. And with that, he bid the District adieu in a blog post Monday.

"As I’m about to make one of the bigger decisions of my life, I’ll be saying goodbye to my familiar life as a Redskin," Cousins wrote on his official website, tweeting it out Monday afternoon. "After calling Washington home for the past six years, the team has decided to move on to another option and, in turn, my family and I will be moving on as well."

Although he grew up in Michigan and went to school in Michigan State, D.C. still feels like home for him. "You never fully leave your first NFL team, especially after six seasons," he wrote.

Despite his apparent disagreement with management and ownership with the Redskins, a relationship that appeared contentious at times, he thanked Dan Snyder, Bruce Allen, and Coach Jay Gruden in his message.

"Thank you all for the opportunity you gave me," he wrote. "When Cooper someday asks: 'Hey Dad, what was it like playing for the Redskins?' I’ll proudly tell him it was a dream come true."

The Redskins passed on Cousins after using the franchise tag on him two consecutive years, but failed to get a long-term deal done.
