Man Shot by DC Police in Southeast: Reports

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said the man had robbed a woman and produced a gun when confronted by officers.

WASHINGTON, DC — D.C. police officers opened fire on an armed robber in Southeast D.C. Tuesday morning, sending him to the hospital with "very serious" injuries, according to D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham.

The shooting happened at around 8 a.m. in the 1300 block of Good Hope Road SE. Newsham said the man robbed a woman, and some "very helpful citizens" pursued the man and flagged down a couple of police officers.

The suspect produced a gun and police demanded that he drop it, Newsham said, adding that the officers then opened fire on the suspect.

Police do not believe the man fired at officers with the gun.
