Massive Delays On Metro Monday Due To 'Difficulties'

Single-tracking on the Orange Line on the eastern end of the line will cause significant headaches for riders Monday.

WASHINGTON, DC — Orange Line riders are in for a miserable commute on Monday, at least on the eastern end of the line. Metro will greatly reduce service in that area due to "unforeseen construction difficulties" over the weekend, according to a Metro statement.

"The reduced service will mostly affect the five stations on the eastern end of the Orange Line -- New Carrollton, Landover, Cheverly, Deanwood, and Minnesota Avenue -- where trains will run about every 16 minutes, rather than every 8 minutes," the statement reads. "Every other Orange Line train will begin/end at Stadium-Armory, rather than New Carrollton, preserving relatively normal service levels between Vienna and Stadium-Armory."

If you normally drive to stations on the eastern Orange Line, you might want to consider Largo Town Center or Morgan Boulevard on the Blue Line instead.

"The construction delay was caused by mechanical issues with mobile concrete plants used to pour new concrete pads under the rails," the statement adds. "Metro crews and contractors will need additional time to pour concrete and allow it to properly cure before reinstalling the rails on which trains operate."

If you do insist on taking the Orange Line anyway, expect an additional 10 to 15 minutes of travel time.
