Metro Closing Time Could Get Pushed Back on Weekends: Report

Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld is reportedly open to a 1 a.m. weekend closing time.

WASHINGTON, DC — After much anger over Metro's early closing times due to budget cutbacks amidst a system-wide safety crisis, there's a chance that the weekend closing time could get extended by an hour, according to a report.

WTOP is reporting that Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld is open to a 1 a.m. weekend closing time for the system instead of midnight. But it would also mean 11:30 p.m. closings on weekdays, and a closing time of 11 p.m. on Sundays.

A Thursday hearing at Metro headquarters would consider four scenarios:

  • Scenario A: Mon-Thu 5 a.m. - midnight, Fri 5 a.m. - midnight, Sat 7 a.m. - midnight, Sun 7 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Scenario B: Mon-Thu 5 a.m. - 11:30 p.m., Fri 5 a.m. - midnight, Sat 7 a.m. - midnight, Sun 7 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.
  • Scenario C: Mon-Thu 5 a.m. - 11:30 p.m., Fri 5 a.m. - 1 a.m., Sat 7 a.m. - 1 a.m., Sun 8 a.m. - 11 p.m.
  • Scenario D: Mon-Thu 5 a.m. - midnight, Fri 5 a.m. - 3 a.m., Sat 9 a.m. - 3 a.m., Sun noon - 11 p.m.

Weidefeld, however, is leaning toward more closure time so that workers can get the necessary inspections and work done as Metro grapples with an ongoing SafeTrack plan to fix chronic problems throughout the system.
