Metro to Stay Open Until 3 AM on New Year's Day

Metro is also suspending "Surges" until the end of January.

WASHINGTON, DC — Fear not, New Year's Eve revelers in D.C.: despite talk of rolling back service hours throughout the Metro system, WMATA is giving you a one-night reprieve on New Year's Eve and will stay open until 3 a.m. on New Year's Day.

Metro announced Thursday morning in a statement that in addition, all SafeTrack "Surges" would be suspended from Dec. 20 through the end of January to allow for preparations for Donald Trump's inauguration as president on Jan. 20. Information on the 2017 Surges will be announced in early January.

"In addition to a break from surge activity, there will be no scheduled maintenance on the Metrorail system over the Christmas or New Year’s holiday weekends," the statement reads. "Trains will run on their regular weekend schedules on all lines."

“We are pleased to offer special late-night rail service again until 3 a.m. on New Year’s Eve,” Metro Manager Paul Wiedefeld said in the statement. “I view this as an important public service for the benefit of riders and the communities we serve.”
