Metro's Red Line Shuts Down Monday Because of a Bolt

BREAKING: Service has just been restored, but there will be residual delays Monday afternoon.

UPDATE 12:09 p.m.: Metro says service has been restored between Union Station and Gallery Place/Metro Center, although "residual delays continue both directions."

WASHINGTON, DC — Metro service has reportedly been suspended on the Red Line between Union Station and Metro Center after reports of smoke, and it now appears that a studbolt that became grounded in the tunnel near Gallery Place is the cause.

Metro tweeted at 10:08 a.m. that service had been suspended due to "fire department activity outside Gallery Place."

Everything seemed to be fine after inspections turned up nothing between Gallery Place and Judiciary Square, and Metro even tweeted at 10:44 a.m. that service would resume shortly. Five minutes later, however, Metro once again tweeted that service had been suspended due to fire department activity.

Shortly after 11 a.m., Metro reported that a maintenance inspection had turned up a studbolt that had become grounded, and repair work was underway.
