Multiple Crashes Shut Down Chain Bridge Friday Morning

Police described Chain Bridge as "extremely icy" and closed it as a result.

Chain Bridge was shut down for a couple of hours Friday morning as extremely icy conditions caused multiple accidents.

D.C. Police tweeted at 6:50 a.m. that the bridge was "extremely icy" and that there had been multiple accidents, prompting D.C. salt trucks and the Arlington County Police Department to come and assist.

D.C. Police tweeted at 7:21 a.m. that authorities had decided to close the bridge because of the conditions.

"CHAIN BRIDGE IS CLOSED in BOTH DIRECTIONS at this time until the surface is deemed safe to travel on," police added.

Shortly before 9 a.m., police announced the bridge had been re-opened to traffic.
