The shooting occurred at the end of the top of sixth inning of the Washington Nationals' game against the San Diego Padres on Saturday night. As the Nationals players were leaving the field, gunshots could be heard coming from outside the third base side of the stadium
The shooting sent panic through Nationals Park, with fans scrambling from their seats. Some fans came onto the field and others headed to the concourse of Nationals Park after the shooting.
Fans were initially told to remain in the stadium area. As shouts of "shooter" were heard in certain sections of the stadium, one woman broke her nose ducking for cover, according to a fan who witnessed her injury, The Washington Post reported.
About 15 minutes later, after Nationals Park security confirmed the incident was outside the third base gate, the stadium's public address announcer informed fans they could exit the stadium through the center field and right field gates.

Over the last few months, several shootings and other acts of violence have occurred around Nationals Park. On May 17, a man was shot and killed in the 100 block of O Street SW, just a couple of blocks from Nationals Park. A double shooting in the 1400 block of 1st SW — about four blocks from the stadium — on May 12 left one man injured and one juvenile injured.
In March, a 15-year-old girl and 13-year-old girl participated in a carjacking near the stadium that led to the death of a Virginia man. Three girls were arrested on July 9 after allegedly attempting to carjack someone and using a stun gun near Nationals Park.
A D.C. Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for the area surrounding Nationals Park said Sunday that something has to be done to address gun violence in the District, WTOP reported.
Edward Daniels, chairman of the ANC for District 6D, said the situation was “embarrassing to the city.”
“It’s really ridiculous, because we’ve had a number of shootings in our neighborhood, between Southeast and Southwest, between Navy Yard and the Wharf in the Southwest community. We need a solution," Daniels told WTOP. "This is not what we need.”
