Newseum Holds Annual 'Without News' Campaign Monday

The Newseum will look completely different Monday, as part of their annual #WithoutNews campaign.

WASHINGTON, DC — The Newseum will look completely different Monday, as no newspapers will be displayed in the Today's Front Pages exhibit outside the Newseum, inside the Newseum, or online at newseum.org. This transformation is apart of the museum's annual campaign "#WithoutNews," according to a press release.

The newspaper blackout marks the Newseum's third #WithoutNews campaign, meant to raise awareness of the threats journalists face around the world. The museum holds this campaign so people can picture a world without the journalists who bring us news.

Also on Monday, the Newseum will rededicate its Journalists Memorial, which recognizes men and women who died or were killed while reporting news. Fourteen names of journalists will be added to the memorial to represent reporters who died in pursuit of the news in 2016.

“Journalists last year faced unprecedented dangers as they strove to report the news, often in countries where press freedom is imperiled or nonexistent,” Gene Policinski, chief operating officer of the Newseum Institute, said in a statement. “The journalists recognized on this memorial laid down their lives in their effort to serve the public, many of them continuing to work after being attacked or facing death threats.”

The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Michael Oreskes, the senior vice president of news and editorial director for NPR, will deliver the keynote remarks at the ceremony. Journalists recognized in the ceremony include NPR photojournalist David Gilkey, who was killed in an attack by the Taliban while reporting on the war in Afghanistan a year ago.
