D.C. crash investigators are looking into a fatal crash that took place early Saturday morning in Southeast.
WASHINGTON, DC — Metropolitan Police Department detectives from the Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a fatal crash that took place early Saturday morning on South Capitol Street, according to a police release.
Following a preliminary investigation, police determined that around 2:51 a.m., Wayne Watkins, 54, of Northeast was driving a silver Ford Explorer northbound in the 2700 block of South Capitol Street, Southeast. Negotiating a curve, Watkins' vehicle hit the right guard rail, crossed over the left lane, and then struck the left guard rail. This caused the vehicle to rollover before coming to a full stop. Watkins was ejected from the vehicle.
D.C. Fire and EMS determined that Watkins showed no signs of life and he was pronounced dead on the scene. He was later taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
