Officer-Involved Shooting Faces Internal Affairs Review: Police

Internal Affairs agents are reviewing an officer-involved shooting Friday night in Northeast D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC — Internal Affairs Bureau agents from the Metropolitan Police Department are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Friday night in Upper Central Northeast, according to a police release.

Around 11:13 p.m., a man armed with a gun confronted an off-duty MPD officer in the 4200 block of Minnesota Ave., N.E. After the two exchanged gunfire, the suspect fled the scene. The police officer was not injured. The suspect was later found, suffering from a gunshot wound. D.C. Fire and EMS transported him to an area hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

After searching the area of the shooting, officers recovered a firearm.

On Saturday, officers arrested Cornell Smith, 17, of Northeast, and charged him with assault with a dangerous weapon, theft first Degree (stolen auto), carrying a pistol without a license outside of a home or business, and unauthorized use of vehicle.

Police also charged Smith as an adult on an outstanding felony arrest warrant for a July 25, armed robbery in the 600 block of Division Ave., N.E.

The off-duty officer involved in Friday night's shooting was placed on administrative leave, as per department policy. Officers who responded to the scene activated their body-worn cameras, and the footage is currently under review.
