This week's weather forecast in Washington, D.C. starts with mostly sunny skies, but storm chances aren't far behind. Here's the timeline.

The line is "April showers" for a reason, and we'll know it this week.

Monday is going to look a lot like Sunday, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures climbing to nearly 80 degrees.

But the chance for showers will begin overnight and into Tuesday morning, with showers and possibly a thunderstorm by the time we're heading home from work Tuesday afternoon.

Things will look better Wednesday, but showers will likely return Thursday. The current forecast for next weekend suggests mostly cloudy skies with a chance for rain.

In the national forecast, the Weather Channel says it will be a week of severe weather, with tornado threats for the Midwest and the South.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 80. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph.

Tuesday: A slight chance of showers before noon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between noon and 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 83. West wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: A slight chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 67. Chance of precipitation is 20%..

Thursday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 64. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Friday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 68.

Sunday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 69. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
