Record-Breaking Warm Weather On The Way For NoVa, DC

WASHINGTON, DC — While it would have been nice to have 70-degree highs over the long Presidents Day weekend, nobody will turn down the possible record-setting temperatures moving into the Washington, D.C., region. Highs are expected to hit 70 degrees or go higher the next two days across northern Virginia. The record high temperature in Washington on Wednesday is 76 degrees and it's expected we will tie or smash that record as much of the region is projected to be in the mid- to upper 70s.

The temps at the end of the week will fall back into the mid to upper 40s, much closer to normal highs. Unfortunately, the upcoming weekend looks very rainy with grey skies, although highs should hit 60 degrees.

The National Weather Service says, "Warm front passes through this morning. Unusually warm this afternoon. Record warmth possible."

"Seventy in February is actually pretty rare," said NBC Washington Meteorologist Chuck Bell. "Normally, we go many years without reaching 70 at all."

If the forecast holds up, this February is likely to finish as the third warmest on record behind only 1976 and 2017. In 2017, there were six days in February where the thermometer reached 70 degrees or higher, making it the warmest February on record dating back to 1871.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 73. South wind 9 to 11 mph.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. South wind 7 to 9 mph.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Southwest wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Wednesday Night: A chance of showers before 1am, then a chance of rain after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph becoming north after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 51. Northeast wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Thursday Night: A chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 41. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Friday: A chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 53. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Friday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 64. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Saturday Night: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 54. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Sunday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 66. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
