Spectacular Lotus Festival Kicks Off This Weekend at Kenilworth Park

Traditional dancing, face painting, lotus tea tasting and many other activities are planning for this Saturday.

Good news for local botany fans, and for people looking to get the family out of the house this weekend: the National Park Service is celebrating its centennial year with an invitation to enjoy the annual Lotus and Water Lily Festival at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens.

Located right on the border of Northeast D.C. and Prince George's County, Kenilworth Park is situated along the Anacostia River and thus is able to offer spectacular views of lotuses and water lilies in full bloom during the festival, which will highlight Asian and East African culture on Saturday, July 16 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., according to a statement.

The event is free and open to the public.

In addition to beautiful flowers, you'll also get to participate in hands-on activities like face painting, lotus tea tasting and Junior Ranger fun. You can also watch traditional Asian and African dancing performances and learn from gardening workshops and educational exhibitions.

Officials advise using public transportation to get to the park, although satellite parking is available at Kenilworth Park and at the nearby recreation center. Free shuttle service runs between those parking areas and Minnesota Avenue Metro Station.
