Speed Camera-Destroying Man Becomes DC Superhero

A man who was captured on video toppling a D.C. speed camera and hurling a chunk of equipment into the night has become a local legend.

WASHINGTON, DC -- No one knows his identity. No one even knows what he looks like. But to many in D.C., he is a force for good, and perhaps the District's first true superhero.

And all because he went nuts on a speed camera in a meltdown that was caught on video (embedded below).

Now police are looking for him after multiple D.C. speed cameras were damaged, while many on social media call him a hero.

"Someone out there is doing God's work," remarked Reddit user Scattered_Castles on the D.C. subreddit.

Another user agreed, noting he got a $100 ticket for going 10 miles per hour over the limit on a "steep hill."

Many were to quick to grant him superhero status, with one saying "not all heroes wear capes" and another making a Batman reference: "The hero we need, but don't deserve."

Speed cameras are scattered throughout the district, snapping photos of license plates if the vehicle crosses a certain speed threshold and automatically mailing out expensive fines. Not surprisingly, those hulking boxes have few allies other than the police.

"It's nothing about safety and all about a cash grab," remarked scene_missing on the forum.

Not everyone agreed with it.

"I hope those cheering this vandalism because they feel that speed limit enforcement is 'nothing more than a cash grab' can enlighten me," wrote NicholasAakre. "Since you think that fines are an inappropriate response to speeding, what response is warranted? If you think that speeding doesn't warrant a response, why?"

His comment has a negative score, indicating most don't agree, although it did set off a reasonable debate about the subject. One user wasn't impressed with the comment, however.

"You must be a lot of fun at parties," he wrote.
