These Celebrities Will Be at the 2016 African American Museum Opening in DC

President Obama and a host of other important people will be on hand for the sold out event on Sept. 24.

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Museum of African American History and Culture is having its grand opening this weekend, and it will be a star-studded event. About 20,000 people are expected to attend the museum's opening on Sept. 24, and streets around the museum at 14th Street and Constitutional Avenue NW will be shut down.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will be in attendance for the grand gala opening. They will be joined by members of Congress, the Supreme Court and anyone lucky enough to snag tickets.

Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, will also be there. He is a veteran of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., who is chancellor of the Smithsonian, will be on hand for the dedication.

Musicians including Living Colour, Public Enemy and the Roots will perform that evening. There will also be storytellers and dancers performing throughout the weekend.

The museum was made possible thanks to more than $273 million contributed from private donors, including foundations created by Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan and Bill and Melinda Gates, to name a few.
