Thousands Sign Up for Massive Pokemon Go Walk on National Mall

More than 4,000 say they're going to the Jefferson Memorial on Saturday to catch pokemon.

It's going to be quite the sight: more than 4,000 people -- and perhaps many more than that -- all walking around the National Mall in D.C. while playing the new hit mobile game Pokemon Go.

The pokemon trainers will descend on the Jefferson Memorial at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, and walk around the National Mall, grabbing as many elusive pokemon as they can, according to the group's Facebook page.

The event, started by six people whose occupations range from Geek Squad employee to 3D artist, has totally blown up, with more than 4,000 indicating they are going and a total of 13,000 saying they're interested.

"We're going to get ourselves to DC to have a walk-about and catch Pokemon," the Facebook page states. "Get your battery packs ready and charged, gonna be a long day. Bring anyone you want, eat food in DC, catch some 'mons, have a good time. Feel free to invite your friends to this event. I'm going to light the biggest fire the North has ever seen."

In a July 25 update to the page, Daniel Anthony Gonzales -- one of the organizers -- asked those participating to be respectful of the memorials.

"Do not be loud, obnoxious, or rude nearby the memorials," he wrote. "Do not play INSIDE a monument or memorial as well. We don't condone that. I'm sure you've heard of the behavior happening at the holocaust museum when the game first game out, and that's exactly what we will not tolerate. Put your phone away when entering buildings."

Players in the game choose one of three teams to be a part of: Team Mystic, Team Valor and Team Instinct. The event will separate all players into those teams, with each team having a separate route to walk. Everyone will start at the Jefferson Memorial at 1 p.m. and finish at the Washington Monument at around 4:30 p.m.

The event is so big the organizers had to get the map routes approved by the National Park Service. The routes will avoid the World War II, Vietnam and Korean War Memorials as well as the Holocaust Museum.
