WASHINGTON, DC — With the Washington Football Team slated to announce its new team name on Wednesday, we surveyed readers on what the new name should be.

A total of 1,020 respondents participated in the Patch survey from noon Jan. 26 to noon on Jan. 31. In the survey, we asked readers to choose their favorite name from the list of finalist names. The name with the most votes was Red Hogs (37.4 percent), followed by Washington Football Team (24.8 percent).

Commanders came in third with 18.1 percent. The next choices were Defenders (7.1 percent), Armada (4.7 percent), Presidents (4.6 percent) and Brigade (3.3 percent). The survey is non-scientific and is only intended to show public sentiment.

We also asked respondents about their satisfaction with the team and what the team should do to regain fans. On a scale of "1" (worst) to "5" (best), the most (39.1) gave the team a "1" rating. The second-highest rating was "3" from 26 percent, while 23.6 percent gave the team a "2 rating. A "5" rating was given by 6 percent, while 5.3 percent gave a "4" rating.

There were some common themes when respondents answered how the team can regain fans. Many mentioned winning or ousting Dan Snyder for new team ownership. Others mentioned moving the team back to the now-closed RFK Stadium, the team's former home before it moved to FedEx Field in Maryland, or a new location in Northern Virginia.

The fan favorite name Red Wolves was not used in the survey, since the team previously said it would not be considered amid trademark concerns from other teams. Some respondents mentioned the name Red Wolves as a way to regain fans or reinstating the Redskins name.

Here's a selection of responses from the survey:

  • Hit the reset button and sell the team. Start over from scratch.
  • Winning would be a start. This organization should be a "case study" in business schools on how to destroy a once admired franchise. Leadership and competence is everything.
  • Win, first & foremost. Make smart roster moves. Announce plan for new stadium in D.C.
  • Easy answer: win — if that doesn’t work, next best is community engagement and to have players behave in such a way that parents can hold them up as examples to their kids.
  • Ticket Giveaways, help small businesses, reach out to the community
  • Play decent football and quit worrying so much about names…they will always be the Redskins to fans anyway
  • Remove Snyder, lower prices and draft a QB. We have wasted so much young talent through the years. When you have double digit QBs in as many years, something is drastically wrong.
  • Change ownership, be transparent with the harassment investigation results, truly represent the DMV area
  • Get a top tier QB, win games/playoff games, new ownership, new top of the line stadium, listen to fans when it comes to the new name
  • Win games. Stop ripping off fans. Improve the stadium and stadium experience. Basically do everything different from what you are doing today from a fan perspective. Treat fans like fans and not like a revenue stream. Even though fans are a revenue stream (I get it, football is a business), that should be transparent to the fans.

The new name and logo will be revealed Wednesday. The team confirmed burgundy and gold will remain the team colors.
