WASHINGTON, DC — There are often lists compiled that offer interesting statistics, but this one really gives us paws: Rover.com, the nation's largest network of 5‑star pet sitters and dog walkers, has released its fifth annual report on the most popular dog names throughout the country — including Washington, D.C., where researchers found people opt for human names for their pets.

The top dog name in Washington, and nationwide, for male dogs is Max, while the top name for a female is Bella, according to the study. The full top 10 lists are below.

From Stranger Things to powerful women, America’s inspiration for dog names says a lot about what matters to us now. “Star Wars” names like Rey and Leia are up 70 percent this year, says the website, while “Game of Thrones”-inspired names, such as Khaleesi and Snow, are up 12 percent.
