President Trump's motorcade traveled straight through an area that was under active tornado warning on Monday evening as severe storms swept through the D.C. region, according to a report.

Steven Portnoy, who covers the White House for CBS News, wrote in the pool report that the president's motorcade took the Beltway back to D.C. which was "notable because a portion of the route was, technically, in a zone designed [sic] by the National Weather Service at Sterling, Virginia to be under an active tornado warning at the time," he wrote.

Portnoy said the scene only got more harrowing from there.

"Skies were scarily dark and the wind gusts knocked our top-heavy van around a bit as we weaved in and out of traffic as we crossed the American Legion Bridge," he continued. "Wireless emergency alert tones were heard (many times) in the vans as we sped onto the GW Parkway. That's when the rain started."

By the time the motorcade passed CIA headquarters in Langley, "we were in a full downpour, driving through the leading edge of the Derecho," Portnoy wrote.

He added that motorcade vehicles had to drive through heavy standing water on the parkway at a high rate of speed. Fortunately, everyone was able to make it back into D.C. safely just before 7 p.m.

There have been a lot of colorful incidents involving President Trump's motorcade since his presidency began. Last October, a woman was fired after she was photographed flipping off the motorcade as it drove past her on her bike. She raised more than enough money through a crowdfunding campaign, and she sued her former employer.

Earlier this year, protesters purchased a billboard sign outside Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort that reads "Impeachment Now" in the style of Trump's 2016 campaign signs. The sign was placed in that spot so Trump would see it as his motorcade passed through.

And in February, one of the motorcade's drivers inadvertently brought a firearm near Trump's West Palm Beach golf club, prompting questioning from the Secret Service and local law enforcement officials.

The presidential motorcade is comprised of about 20 to 30 vehicles. It typically carries the president, his family, members of the press, security, staff, and VIP guests. The motorcade is escorted by police, who travel ahead and clear traffic.
