Two More Police Officers In D.C. Die By Suicide After Jan. 6 Riot

The two deaths were confirmed Monday, bringing the total number of officers who took their own lives following the insurrection to four.

WASHINGTON, DC — Two more police officers who responded to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol have died by apparent suicide, according to a report citing a spokesperson for Washington's Metropolitan Police Department.

Officer Gunther Hashida, an 18-year veteran of the department, was found dead in his home Thursday. Just hours after the announcement of Hashida's death, the department confirmed officer Kyle DeFreytag had died by suicide in July.

A total of four officers have taken their own lives since the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Officer Howard Liebengood, a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Capitol Police Department, and Officer Jeffrey Smith, who served 12 years with the Metropolitan Police Department, each died by suicide in the days following the attack.
