Victim Dies Following Traffic Dispute In 3rd Street Tunnel

WASHINGTON, DC — Leon Williams, 52, of Northeast, succumbed to the injuries he received during an altercation following a traffic-related dispute last summer, according to a release from the Metropolitan Police Department.

Around 2:52 p.m., on July 30, the suspect brandished a handgun and fired at Williams following a traffic dispute in the 3rd Street Tunnel near Massachusetts Ave., N.W., according to police. The suspect then left the scene in his vehicle. Williams was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.

On Oct. 22, Williams succumbed to his injuries and his body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Following an autopsy, the medical examiner determined the cause of death to be complications from gunshot wounds. The death was ruled a homicide.

MPD arrested a 21-year-old man of no fixed address on Aug. 5, charging him with assault with intent to kill while armed (gun). Upgraded charges are pending against the defendant. This case remains an active investigation.

MPD is currently offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any persons responsible for committing a homicide in the District. Police ask anyone with information about this case to call 202-727-9099 or send an anonymous tip by text to 50411.
