Washington Capitals 2018 Championship Parade: Everything We Know
The date, route, and start time are all up in the air, but there are some hints.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Now that the Washington Capitals have clinched the 2018 Stanley Cup by defeating the Las Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5, we can start thinking about parades. And a new report suggests that it could be absolutely huge, and take place right on the National Mall on Tuesday.
There's no official announcement yet on a championship parade in D.C., but NBC 4's Mark Seagraves reports that an application submitted to the National Park Service estimates that more than 100,000 fans will attend the parade. And WTTG reports that the parade will be held on Tuesday.
The proposed route is from 17th Street down Constitution Avenue to 7th Street, and a stage would be set up on the center of the National Mall with the U.S. Capitol as a backdrop.

Early Friday morning, D.C. deputy mayor Kevin Donahue tweeted a joke "official notice" for people who miss work due to celebrating the Caps' win to submit to their bosses. At the end of that form, signed "DC Government," he writes: "Your employee will also be taking a sick day next week for a victory parade."

There is not yet any official start time, but based on the tweet above about taking a sick day and going by recent victory parades, it could happen mid-morning or early afternoon. Both championship parades that happened in Philly this year -- in February for the Philadelphia Eagles and in April for the Villanova men's basketball team -- took place at 11 a.m. on the Thursday after the big win.

Whatever the case, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis says it's going to be huge.
"I think it's going to be much bigger than everyone is expecting," Leonsis said on the ice after the win, according to ESPN. "We want to be able to say thank you to people in Virginia and Maryland and Washington, D.C. My goal is to create something that elevates and unites all of the people in our community, so people think happy thoughts about Washington, D.C."
Even President Trump gave a shoutout.
Congratulations to the Washington Capitals on their GREAT play and winning the Stanley Cup Championship. Alex Ovechkin, the team captain, was spectacular - a true Superstar! D.C. is popping, in many ways. What a time!
