Is This Washington DC's New Name?

The D.C. Council has reportedly settled on a new name for the District -- if it manages to someday win statehood.

WASHINGTON, DC — It's not the fanciest of names, but it gets the job done: the D.C. Council is proposing that the District be renamed the "State of Washington, D.C." if it someday achieves statehood -- a big "if" for sure.

Ward 2 council member Jack Evans proposed the name in a measure that was approved unanimously by the D.C. Council, meaning that the other proposed name, "New Columbia," is dead for now, according to a WTOP report.

And there's an additional wrinkle: Ward 6 council member Charles Allen put in an amendment that would result in the "D.C." standing not for District of Columbia, but Douglass Commonwealth, in honor of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, the report states.

New Columbia was a popular name with D.C. voters, who approved the name back in the early 1980s. Voters will have final say on the name and a draft constitution when they go to the polls on Nov. 8.
