Wegmans To Open First DC Location In 2022

"Wegmans is a decisive win for our city," Mayor Bowser said in a statement.

WASHINGTON, DC — Upscale grocery chain Wegmans will open their first DC location in 2022, according to reports. Mayor Muriel Browser said Sunday that the grocery chain's first DC store will anchor the redevelopment of the Fannie Mae headquarters at 3939 Wisconsin Ave. NW.

“Wegmans is a decisive win for our city,” Mayor Bowser said in a statement, according to The Washington Post.

DC-based Roadside Development and North America Sekisui House LLC (NASH) bought the Fannie Mae campus last fall for $89 million. They plan to develop the 228,000 square foot campus, and the ten acres of land that surrounds it, into a mixed-use "urban village" that will include residential, retail and office space.

The grocery store is expected to take up 80,000 square feet, and will be located on the lower level of the complex. This is about twice the size of the Whole Foods Market in Logan Circle.

“People know them and love them, but until now they’ve had to travel to the suburbs. With this store, we’re bringing Wegmans right to their doorsteps,” said Richard Lake, the founding partner of Roadside Development.

Wegmans now has ten locations in Virginia and eight in Maryland. They're planning to expand to Tysons Corner, Chantilly and Reston. The first New York City location is expected to open in Brooklyn next year.

Wegmans has somewhat of a cult following, with very loyal patrons who talk highly of the fresh produce and healthy food options. Social media users have taken to Twitter to express their thoughts on the DC store:
