Wi-Fi Coming to Metro Soon: Report

WMATA will soon be doing a "lite" rollout at six stations.

Metro is seeking to launch a "lite" Wi-Fi network for its riders starting this month with a small rollout at six stations, according to a WTOP report.

Metro has been installing and testing the network over the first half of this year, with plans to make Wi-Fi available at all 91 stations by the end of the year, at least for internal and operational use, according to the report, which notes that the pilot program won't begin until a new website is launched

The included stations are Metro Center, Gallery Place, L'Enfant Plaza, Union Station, Judiciary Square and Archives.

DCist reported back in February that the transit agency began installing radio cables along tunnel walls throughout the rail system. The installation was aimed at not only providing Wi-Fi, but also improving radio coverage for Metro and first responders.
